INTERVIEW: Matt Tomamichel (Corporate)
Posted in Interviews, Retail Stores with tags Cincinnati, Corporate, Interview, Matt Tomamichel, Retail Stores on December 3, 2009 by The Goodie BagPlease introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about what you do.
My name is Matt Tomamichel and I’m the owner of Corporate. You can catch me in the shop everyday. My shop is located in Cincinnati, Ohio. My goal is to bring the city up to speed in streetwear culture.
What is life like up in Cincinnati, as far as music, fashion, and popular culture?
Life in Cincinnati is like everyone has a secret. There are so many hidden groups in the city that all follow the same music, art, and culture. Now it’s our job to find each other. It’s like we’re beginning to finally come together in our city to spread the common interests.
Tell us a little about Corporate and the people involved?
I run Corporate with the help of my friends (Noli, Sneaker Dave, Rio, Josh, Skavenger, and Mike). While I own and work in the shop everyday open until close, they all leave their stamp on the shop as well. We bring the authentic love for what we do everyday and the people of our city support the vision. It’s become more than a place to shop at. It’s become a 2nd home more or less to all of our clientele.
What kind of brands does Corporate carry?
We carry Nike, Jordan Brand, Play Cloths, New Era, UNDFTD, Stussy, Akomplice, and many more.
What are some of your favorite brands out right now?
The brands our clientele follow are Stussy, UNDFTD, Play Cloths, and Nike / Jordan. These brands seem to be bringing the clean designs and quality to the pieces they produce. You have to think right now it seems as everyone is reaching for pieces with minimal markings.
What new upcoming events or releases are you currently working on?
We currently have our own private label shop brand being worked on and produced at the moment. I can’t just throw out a Gilden tee with a logo or design on it. I don’t want to set a time table on when it will launch just know its coming. We’re currently planning another Spring concert, and our annual Sneaker Showcase (May 2010). We want to always have our events begin and end with our shop.
What would you say are the most difficult aspects or being in your line of work?
The most difficult aspect for me has and always will be pulling myself away from my shop. Often times I burn myself out because I’m a workaholic. I know any owner will tell you separating yourself from your work is difficult because you always want to improve or always feel as if something needs to be done. Corporate has been my dream for so long and is my passion. This shop is everything I’ve wanted to know outside of marriage, a family and kids.
The fashion and music worlds are often tied together…What music artists out right now are grabbing your attention?
Right now, artists that grab my attention are Fly Union, The Clipse, Kanye West, Drake, Kid Cudi, Wale, and Big Sean. These artists in my opinion are direct reflects of what fashion is today -whether you’re a tastemaker or a follower you are a reflection of these artists. For example, every photograph of video features from The Clipse feature items from their Play Cloths line. When you see Drake, the clothes he wears never reveal the brand which seems to be the direction most shoppers are going toward. I think music definitely plays a toll on fashion to any listener.
